I don't know what to look for yet to predict if a planet is terraformable, but I know it needs to be in "the goldilocks zone" which is a distance range

In the most loose model, the habitable zone exists between 0.38 – 10 AU. An alternative term that scientists use for the CHZ is the “Goldilocks zone”. The term " Goldilocks zone " emerged in the 1970s, referencing specifically a region around a star whose temperature is "just right" for water to be present in the liquid phase. In 1993, astronomer James Kasting introduced the term "circumstellar habitable zone" to refer more precisely to the region then (and still) known as the habitable zone. "We found 603 planets, 10 of which are Earth size and orbit in the habitable zone, where conditions permit surface liquid water," the astronomers wrote."We find that 22 percent of Sun-like stars harbor Earth-size planets orbiting in their habitable zones.

Habitable zones are also known as Goldilocks’ zones, where conditions might be just right – neither too hot nor too cold – for life. What Is the Habitable Zone? The tightest model for the habitable zone in our Solar System allows orbits between 0.99 – 1.01 AU (1 AU – Astronomical Unit, is the mean distance between the Earth and the Sun). In the most loose model, the habitable zone exists between 0.38 – 10 AU. An alternative term that scientists use for the CHZ is the “Goldilocks zone”. 2019-09-10 · A ‘Goldilocks zone’ for planet size In this artist’s concept, the moon Ganymede orbits the giant planet Jupiter. A saline ocean under the moon’s icy crust best explains shifting in the auroral belts measured by the Hubble telescope.

The energy Earth receives from the Sun is in balance with the energy our planet loses to space: - Earth reflects an average 30% of incoming solar energy back to space The size of the habitable zone clearly depends on the luminosity of the star, which determines the equilibrium temperature of the planet. However, modern models for the range of the habitable zone take into account more subtle effects, such as the effect of the carbonate-silicate cycle in regulating carbon dioxide in a planet's atmosphere.

(13) A Habitable Zone is defined as a region of space at just the right distance from its host star wherein water in liquid form can exist on the surface of a planet.

ENLARGE. In a recent paper, Harvard University researchers described a new, lower size limit for planets to maintain surface liquid water for long periods of time, extending the so-called Habitable or "Goldilocks’’ Zone for small, low-gravity planets. 2 dagar sedan · The distance Earth orbits the Sun is just right for water to remain a liquid. This distance from the Sun is called the habitable zone, or the Goldilocks zone.

If the nearby exoplanet Kapteyn b exists, it would be the oldest-known planet to orbit its star in the coveted habitable zone, where water could flow on the planet's surface. A possible ocean world orbiting in the habitable zone—the region around a star where the temperature is right for liquid water, a requirement for life on Earth.

Modelling suggests life potential is determined by more than simply distance from a star. Richard A Lovett reports.
